In a remarkable incident that unfolded on December 20, 2022, at the Ice World Maryland ice rink, a young skater faced a life-threatening medical emergency that quickly turned into cardiac arrest. This heart-stopping moment was met with swift and heroic action from the staff, showcasing the commitment of Black Bear Sports Group to prioritize the safety of families within their ice rinks.
Two days ago, Ice World was honored with the Save of a Lifetime award, commemorating the extraordinary efforts displayed during the December 2022 incident. The incident, which could have taken a tragic turn, saw a young skater experience cardiac arrest during a public skate session.
As part of the commendable response, the skate guard on duty immediately noticed the skater’s distress and approached to offer assistance. With the quick intervention of the skate guard and fellow skaters, it was soon revealed that the young skater was in cardiac arrest. The staff promptly initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and utilized the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) available on-site. These crucial lifesaving measures resulted in a return of spontaneous respirations, and the skater was subsequently air-lifted to a medical facility for further treatment.
Black Bear Sports Group emphasizes that the success of this life-saving intervention can be attributed to the comprehensive CPR/AED training provided not only at Ice World Maryland but across all Black Bear ice rinks. Ensuring the safety of patrons remains a paramount concern for the organization, and all rinks are equipped with AEDs, while the staff is proficiently trained to execute life-saving procedures.
